Hi Paul. Sarah said you were headed to the Netherlands soon. I lived in Leiden, a small college town about 25 min from Amsterdam. In my opinion, Leiden is worth a stop because it's less 'touristy' than Amsterdam and you get to see more 'regular dutch people' rather than tourists and city people - not that there's anything wrong with city people... My best memory of Leiden is the open markets on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, so if you do go, try to make it on one of those days. I don't know Amsterdam that well. Everyone speaks English so you can always ask around for things that are happening when you are there. I went to the city two or three times to go out dancing and once or twice to go the museums. There are thousands of clubs...I don't remember any of the names but I am hardly an authority on what makes a good spot anyway! As far as daytime fun...There are great museums of course...Rijks Museum and the Van Gogh Museum - both some of the best in the world! If you arrive in Amsterdam by train, leave that area immediately. It's a complete tourist trap. I have a vague memory of going out the back way for some reason. I can't rememeber which direction to go, but around the train station are all of the touristy 'coffee shops,' the red light district, etc. I'm sorry I'm not more helpful. If you have any specific questions you can give me a try. I hope you are having fun!
